Beauty and the Beast: The Effect of Segregation on African-American Children

Students from Carbondale Middle School and Carbondale Community High School will participate in a hip hop literary rendition of the fairy-tale, ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ as it is told by Hip Hop Griots. Beauty will be represented by the young children and the Beast (who is never seen) by the ôseparate but equalö laws that plagued the education and the lifestyles of African Americans. The Hip Hop Griots will tell the story of the Clark and Clark doll study that was used in the Brown v. Board of Education case. Students will also participate in an essay and video contest, and the winners will be announced on this night.
