The second master class in Illinois Humanities’ year-long Elective Studies series, this course will be taught by renowned artist and educator Christine Sun Kim and Director of Access and Community Programs for the Whitney Museum of American Art Danielle Linzer. Kim and Linzer have worked for years to fine-tune The Vlog Project, an initiative by The Whitney Museum to provide information and inclusive access to culture through short digital films exploring contemporary art in American Sign Language.
Through painstaking research, trial and error, and in cooperation with a myriad of collaborators, Kim and Linzer have devised a thorough and aesthetically provocative practice for creating meaningful and accessible content that discusses art for ASL-fluent audiences. The series aims primarily to increase opportunities for audiences who are deaf and hard of hearing to learn about twentieth- and twenty-first century art, and also enables educators to participate in the discussion surrounding the expansion of ASL’s vocabulary of contemporary art terms.
The duo will delve into their process – lessons learned, best practices, and opportunities for the future – in this three hour course aimed at artists and arts organizations who would like to be the subject of vlogs like these or to create them moving forward. Illinois Humanities will be working with Kim, Linzer and two local deaf arts educator apprentices, Jennifer Hart and Matt Dans, to film two vlogs during their visit as well.
After the master class, Christine Sun Kim will perform an original work of performance art at 3:30pm at Links Hall | Constellation. The performance will be free and open to the public. A short Q&A and reception will follow.
