Animal Husbandry and Anabaptist Culture in Illinois

A Road Scholar program by Debra A. Reid

This program traces the relationship of intense animal husbandry practiced among Anabaptist groups in Europe and the ways these groups transplanted such practices to Illinois during the mid-nineteenth century. It begins with an overview of Anabaptist groups, including the Old Order Amish, and then analyzes the ways these groups used farming to help preserve their way of life in the face of major social, economic, and political change.
