A Road Scholar Program by William Iseminger

American Indians created artifacts in several media that depicted human beings or culture heroes. The materials used and the art styles changed with time and place. These artifacts of stone, shell, copper, and wood give insights into the appearance of these ancient people, as well as clothing, adornment, body decoration, and hair styles. They also reflect the belief systems of their creators. William Iseminger is one of the world’s foremost experts on the Cahokia civilization. He holds an MA in Anthropology from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and has worked at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site for many years. For 33 years, he has offered public programs on a great variety of subjects related to his work in Archaeology and the Native American cultures of the Upper Mississippi and Illinois River Valleys. In 1996, the Illinois Association of Museums honored Bill with their Lifetime Achievement Award.
