Take part in an evening of traditional Arabic poetry, music and discussion on the importance of teaching Arabic language, literacy, and history in Chicago.

Presented by the University of Chicago’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies, and the Center for Arabic Language and Culture, this event aspires to promote cross-cultural engagement, and to demonstrate connections between traditional Arabic poetry and contemporary Arabic music.

Featuring a live performance by Salaam, who was NPR’s Album Pick in October 2013, and was recently featured on Public Radio International’s (PRI) The World program.

Recitations of traditional Arabic poetry and presentations by Fred Donner, Director of the University of Chicago’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies and Michael Sells, Professor of Islamic History and Literature at the University of Chicago will follow Salaam’s performance, as well as a Q & A session with the audience.
A reception with light refreshments will follow the program from 8 – 9p.

This event is free and open to the public. However, registration is required and can be made online.

This event is presented as part of The Collaborative City, a program of the Illinois Humanities Council, in partnership with the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) and co-sponsored by the Center for Arabic Language and Culture and the University of Chicago’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies.
