A Litany of Gender Legislation

Law and gender have long interacted with one another throughout American history, but the connections between the two have not always been clear. From legislation of 1662 through 20th century Supreme Court cases, gendered decisions became enforceable law. How this gendering of the law happened and the impact it has had will be the center of this presentation. The U.S. Constitution, the 15th Amendment, the 19th Amendment, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title VII and Title IX will be specifically addressed in this context.
