Psychology is one way to consider the great mysteries and powers of the mind, and through presentations and a conversation with the audience, we’ll be exploring popular psychology – from drugs to self-help and therapy – as a way to understand who – and what we are.

Rami Gabriel, Associate Professor of Psychology at Columbia College, will go over the major themes that best-selling authors like Deepak Chopra and others have written about in the last ten years, while Marya Schechtman, Professor of Philosophy at UIC, will discuss the different perspectives as to the origins of psychological ailments- are they rooted in the repression of desires and impulses, as Freud argued, or in disorders of the brain or nervous system?

Rami and Marya’s presentations will be followed by a chance for the audience to weigh in and ask questions.

This program is part of Intersections, a lively series of lectures and discussions investigating and celebrating the complexity of contemporary culture and the arts, and is co-sponsored by the Department of Humanities, History, and Social Sciences in the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Columbia College Chicago.
