Presentation 1 - MR. U. S. Grant: A Man and A Patriot!

In period costume and character–in first person– Dan performs a one-act play for 5th grade and up, to include adult-out-of-school audiences, focusing on Grant’s early years and rise to Civil War fame as General of Union Armies in the Western in Theatre. Troubled by the controversy of the Battle of Shiloh, in 1862, “in the field” as Grant, struggling with eulogy of my best friend and subordinate officer, General C. F. Smith, as Dan flashbacks to reflect on the parallels to my life as a citzen-soldier from West Point, the Mexican War, hard times between the wars, and through the early challenges of the Civil War, including life in Illinois. (There is a companion second second-act can be about Grant as President, as a separate add-on event). The one-act is poignant view of Grant’s private and public life, and his values of serving his Country and promoting unity.
There is an optional Q & A after this performance. This show is great for parks, libraries, museums, outdoor or indoor settings, any place with good audience viewing and a performance space 12 feet deep X 16 feet wide.
Dan provides period props, set-pieces, maps and scenic backdrop of PowerPoint slide show, where appropriate. In full performance/presentation mode, the show benefits with 90 minutes pre-show, pre-set-up and prep time, only a modicum of assistance–for PPT–and post-show 30-minute strike and load-out. Dan can provide, if needed, a projector, lap-top, period digital music for pre-show mood, extension cords, and other supports, such as a public “PR” public relations “pack” via email or snail mail to the host organization.

Ulysses Grant… A Visit at Headquarters (virtual edition) features Dan Haughey (hoy) of the Quad Cities USA/ East Moline, Illinois in a first person, one-act play for 5th grade and up, to include adult-out-of-school audiences, focusing on Grant’s rise to Civil War fame as General of Union Armies in the Western in Theatre, culminating in the Battle of Shiloh. History-lovers will enjoy this up-close visit with the General in his headquarters, between battles.
This presentation is approximately 30 minutes with a follow-up, short “Q & A”, referencing questions about General or President. About Road Scholar Dan Haughey
Dan Haughey (hoy) of East Moline holds a BA in Theatre Arts with a minor in English from Eastern Kentucky University, an MFA in Theatre with an emphasis in playwriting and production from Southern Illinois University, and attended the Florida State University-Asolo Conservatory for Professional Actor Training. Dan is an actor, singer, director, playwright and teaching-artist. He has taught for over 25 years, thirteen of those at Black Hawk College (BHC) in Moline, Illinois, where he headed the theatre program, served as Cultural Events Chair, and instructed speech and theatre arts classes. He also served two years on the BHC Faculty Senate and in 2010 culminated his tenure at BHC with the distinction of Professor Emeritus. He has ten years’ experience on stage, television, and film and is a member of the Screen Actors’ Guild (SAG) and former member of Actors’ Equity Association. Dan has toured his one-person shows on Ulysses S. Grant, MR. U. S. GRANT, in nine states since 1981. Dan has served as a Past President of the Illinois Theatre Association and currently as a member of the Teaching Artists Guild of America. His play The Private Room was featured Off-Broadway in 2017 in the prestigious Strawberry One-Act Play Festival.
