How can newsrooms better empower the next generation of journalists and storytellers? How can we equip young people with the tools of journalism while encouraging their creative voice and exploring new avenues for inclusive, community-based reporting?

In this conversation and live reading, young people participating in programs by organizations such as Young Chicago Authors, Public Narrative, the Goodman Theater and Reveal from The Center for Investigative Reporting will discuss how they’re using media and art to tell stories from their communities, shift problematic narratives and extend the reach and life of in-depth reporting.

From Young Chicago Authors and Louder Than A Bomb: The Largest Youth Poetry Festival to CIR’s StoryWorks, we’ll discuss concrete examples for how poetry, theater and other creative outlets can help develop youth voice and find inventive, engaging ways to tell difficult stories. The conversation will focus on best practices, bring youth perspectives to the forefront and share ideas that attendees can take home.

This youth-led session will also highlight original work generated from the programs discussed during the session to help drive the discussion, offer concrete examples of community-based storytelling and spark new ideas.

LUNCH ROUNDTABLE

Thursday, November 9th
11:30 AM – 1:00 PM
1104 S. Wabash, Room 836
RSVP REQUIRED

Audio Engagement Lunch Roundtable
Facilitator: Jesse Dukes, Audio Producer, WBEZ’s Curious City

Audio journalism has been doing “engagement” forever: the call in radio show is a classic, enduring form of engagement, right?. But new generations of producers — raised on the audio features, podcasts, or documentary programs — are looking for new ways to include listeners in audio storytelling.

This short roundtable brings together brave producers who have been experimenting with bringing the audience into the story; you’ll hear them explain what’s worked, and (just as crucially) why efforts sometimes fall flat or are difficult to pull off.

The roundtable is open to all conference registrants, and you’re SPECIFICALLY invited if you’re an audio producer who has tried (or heard) a neat way to include the audience in some fashion. Curated and moderated by Curious City Audio Producer Jesse Dukes of WBEZ.

Space at this roundtable is limited – please RSVP to jdukes@wbez.org with “engagement audio” in the subject, whether you’d like to present an idea or would prefer to just listen in. If there’s an engagement-oriented audio production technique you’ve tried (or heard) and want to share, please also include a short description and a link to any results in your RSVP. Time permitting, we’ll find you a slot on the roundtable.
